TWI says it has successfully produced a hydrogen storage tank demonstrator for the MASTER project (Metallic Aerospace Structures Technologies for Eco-social Returns), announced on January 6, 2026.

The organisation states it worked closely with the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and frames the project around “safe, lightweight and efficient” hydrogen-powered flight for sustainable aviation.

On the welding side, TWI points to friction stir welding (FSW) as the joining route used to produce high-strength, high-integrity joints for mission-critical aerospace structures, and says the work will be featured at the International Friction Welding Conference (IFWC) in May 2026 at its Cambridge site.
