Fronius Velo: Velocity Assist for Manual MIG/MAG
Summary
- Velocity Assistant for manual MIG/MAG to keep travel speed steady on long seams.
- Uses a second friction “Velo wire” to push the torch and hold CTWD; little extra filler.
- Retrofit kit for TPS/i (from 320 A) and iWave; speeds can approach robots in some cases
Manual MIG/MAG lives or dies by pace and torch control. Fronius’ Velo aims at that pain point with assisted guidance for long, straight or repeatable seams in transport, machinery and structural work. The stated goal is simple: steadier speed, less strain, and more repeatable results for both newer welders and seasoned hands.
The mechanism is unusual: a second, arc-free “Velo wire” contacts the work, generating forward motion by friction. That wire also helps hold a constant contact-tip-to-work distance while adding only minimal filler—effectively tying welding speed to the Velo wire feed. Fronius claims up to roughly 2× faster than conventional manual MIG/MAG and, in some applications, “robot-like” travel rates. It supports steel and CrNi joints, and works with Standard, LSC, Pulse, PMC and CMT process variants.
