UK backs £11m Clyde welding centre after SNP refusal

Glasgow’s planned Welding Development Facility is back on track. The UK Government will provide £2.5m after Scottish Enterprise declined support, keeping the £11m project alive on the River Clyde. Ministers say the centre will develop high-integrity welding skills for shipbuilding and submarine work, with training routes for young people entering the trade.
I previously shared the news about the canceled project with you on June 2, 2025. 👇

According to reports, industry partners include Rolls-Royce, with in-kind equipment investment to build a modern welding lab and test capability. The facility is pitched to improve process quality, cut rework, and support future naval builds on the Clyde.
The funding row stems from a Scottish Enterprise policy that treats projects linked to “munitions” as ineligible for grants, which led to the initial refusal. UK ministers criticised the stance and moved to underwrite the gap so the centre can proceed.
