Tesla Recalls Model Y Vehicles Due to Seat Weld Defect
I previously shared news about BMW recalling 1.5 million vehicles due to a weld defect in the brake system. Thankfully, the numbers in this latest update are much, much lower.
Tesla is issuing a recall for 27 of its Model Y vehicles from the 2024 model year over concerns related to the seat recliner welds. The issue affects cars produced at Giga Texas between October 28 and October 30, 2024. The recall is in response to insufficient weld penetration in the seat recliner mechanism, a fault that could compromise the integrity of the seat assembly and pose a serious safety risk in the event of an accident.
For those who want to dive into the full report, I'm leaving the file right here.
The defect was first flagged during a routine inspection at Tesla on October 29, prompting further investigation and a subsequent production halt to prevent more vehicles from being affected. Tesla engineers discovered that the welds connecting the seat recliner mechanism to the seat back fell below the required standards. To mitigate the potential hazard, Tesla is replacing all defective seat assemblies at no cost to the owners and has assured customers that they are prioritizing safety with these proactive measures.
Tesla is also making improvements to its production line to ensure this doesn’t happen again, including stricter equipment parameter controls and improved weld testing processes. Fortunately, no incidents, injuries, or claims have been reported in connection with this defect. While the number of affected vehicles is small, it's a reminder that even tech-savvy automakers like Tesla aren't immune to production hiccups—but taking swift action like this is a step in the right direction for consumer trust and safety.
