HD Hyundai Samho Tests Humanoid Robots for Shipyards
Summary
- HD Hyundai Samho has started a proof-of-concept to assess humanoid robots in shipyard production.
- The first target is simple, repetitive work such as welding and moving items (pick-and-place).
- The company is checking ROI, power infrastructure, and payload limits before scaling to harder tasks.
Shipbuilder HD Hyundai Samho has begun a preliminary review to deploy humanoid robots at its yard, focusing on whether they can fit into real production processes. The company is collecting data around return on investment, power infrastructure needs, and payload, while also looking at how to train the “domain knowledge” required for shipyard work.

A December demonstration at the Yeongam shipyard showed a humanoid receiving worker instructions, carrying a welder, walking on request, performing welding, and doing pick-and-place tasks. Development is described as a collaboration with HD Hyundai Robotics and LG CNS.

The near-term plan is to start with small equipment and other shipbuilding items, using humanoids for simple, repetitive tasks such as welding to lift productivity. The company says it aims to verify and commercialize humanoids next year, and it is running internal AI transformation training (including humanoids) three times a week through November.
