FuseRing: The Future of Welding?
Do you remember that I mentioned a ¨new¨ welding technology which is called FuseRing? Here is the link. Last week inventor of this technology, Paul Cheng, was a guest on Interesting Engineering and they published a podcast about their interview.
Developed by Paul Cheng, FuseRing is a solid-state fusion welding process that eliminates the need for filler metals, fumes, and heat-affected zones. Instead of melting the base metals and adding external materials, FuseRing uses induction heating and kinetic energy. A heating coil is placed between the work faces and, after reaching a hot working temperature, the components are pushed together and rotated slightly to shear and reform the crystal structure, resulting in a seamless, high-strength bond.
By reducing weld time and eliminating extensive post-weld treatments, FuseRing could offer significant cost and safety benefits. Despite these advantages, the welding industry—long dominated by traditional methods—is known for its resistance to change, and integrating new techniques like FuseRing may face regulatory and market challenges.
