Burnaby Firm Fined $26,500 for Welding Fume Violations
WorkSafeBC has fined JWC Environmental Canada ULC more than $26,500 after an inspection at the company’s Burnaby facility revealed workers were exposed to hazardous welding fumes and arc flashes. According to the inspector’s report, a welder operating on stainless steel near a bay door had insufficient exhaust ventilation. The worker wore a respirator but was not clean shaven, compromising the mask’s seal. Other nearby employees did not use respirators or eye protection, leaving them overexposed to fumes and arc flashes.
Upon a follow-up visit, WorkSafeBC found that recommended interim safety measures were not implemented, prompting a stop-work order and a subsequent fine of $26,514.60. The company was also required to enforce a clean-shaven policy for respirator use, install proper local exhaust ventilation, and ensure welding screens or curtains were in place during welding operations. A later inspection confirmed some improvements, but JWC Environmental still faced the penalty for repeated and high-risk violations.
Welding fumes, especially from stainless steel, can contain hexavalent chromium and manganese, posing significant health risks, including cancer and reproductive harm. WorkSafeBC stated the firm had failed to implement an effective exposure control plan, underscoring the importance of compliance with safety regulations to protect workers from toxic fumes and arc flashes.
